Members of Theta Rho Sigma Chapter and Senator Charles E. Schumer, Autism Walk
Theta Rho Sigma has several programs that we focus on in addition to our National Programs. Autism is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty with socialization and communication skills. It can result in mild to severe difficulties in thinking and learning and is frequently marked by unusual interests and repetitive behaviors such as twirling, rocking, and flapping one’s hands. Autism can significantly impede an individual’s ability to lead a fulfilling life and mature to independence. It is believed to be a dysfunction in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Although knowledge of the possible causes and effective treatment of autism is growing, to date, no cure exists. Symptoms typically occur by the time a child is three years old. Recent estimates from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that one out of every 110 American 8-year-olds may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with cancer, diabetes, Downs Syndrome and AIDS combined. Approximately 1 million individuals in the United States have autism.
Each year we participate in the Walk Now for Autism event. The purpose is to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders, and to raise funds for further research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism.
Golden Meals is a community service project aimed at providing food to families in need within the Bronx community during the Thanksgiving holiday. With over 1.5 million New Yorkers living in poverty and the Bronx having one of the highest poverty rates in the nation, it is extremely important to Theta Rho Sigma that we provide our community with the opportunity to enjoy this holiday with their family and loved ones. Through Golden Meals, Theta Rho Sigma, with help from family, friends and the community, donates complete Thanksgiving dinners to families in the Bronx who are in need. We offer groceries to the families that will allow them to make the traditional Thanksgiving meal.
Dear Santa Project
We initially began this program by selecting letters to Santa from the post office. Now Dear Santa has expanded for Theta Rho Sigma. We have adopted Nathan & Arel and bring them gifts from the list each year in December. In exchange they both promise to do well in school.
Toys for Tots
As part of our Holiday Affair we ask that our guest donate a new, unused toy. Theta Rho Sigma collects those toys and donate them to a local military base for Toys for Tots.
